Chrysler Shutdown of All 30 US Plants

Beginning Friday December 19th Chrysler will go into shutdown mode.  Chrysler had originally announced a two week shutdown, but has extended it.  All 30 Chrysler plants will be closed until mid to late January.  Dealers say they are unable to close sales with buyers and the economic problems could result for 20-25% of those sales.  Although, this shutdown will not affect union workers.  It is in UAW contracts that the workers will still recieve their pay and benefits.  Chrysler is shutting down their plants in the hopes of saving money through material and operation costs.  Some believe that GM and Ford may follow suite.  Ford has begun shutting down a portion of its plants and GM has suggested that they may be making a 50% cut in production sometime in January.

Ford has stressed that if one of the other big three went down it may trigger a domino situation.
